Having Your Baby at NYU

Cesarean Delivery

Every consideration is given to safety and the well being of you and your baby. If a cesarean section is necessary, you will be moved to our fully equipped, state-of the-art Cesarean suite located just a few doors down from your labor and delivery room. One family member is allowed in the operating room, provided it is safe for both you and your baby.

If you are scheduled for a cesarean delivery, you will be assigned a date and time. You should arrive two hours before your scheduled time to the 8th floor nurses station and a nurse will greet you and begin to prepare you for the birth of your baby.

Once your baby is born and the both of you are doing well, you will be transferred to the three-bed recovery room so you and your baby can be monitored. Your baby will be placed skin to skin with you. The familiar sound, smells, taste, and warmth of your skin helps the baby know he/she is safe. Our nurses are trained to help you with the first feed. We encourage you to breastfeed your baby as soon as you feel ready to do so. Babies seem most alert and ready to feed during this early time.

You and our baby will stay together while the nurse helps care for you. Once you are ready both you and your baby will be transferred to the Mother Baby Unit.
